An Unexpected Bond Formed in the Mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan
Last week, Baltistan Cycling Club had the pleasure of welcoming a very special guest—Patrick from Switzerland. A passionate cyclist and mountain lover, Patrick had been dreaming for years of visiting the majestic peaks of the Karakoram. His journey led him through the stunning wilderness of Gilgit-Baltistan, with sights of K2, Hidden Peak, Gasherbrum I & II, and Masherbrum leaving him in awe.
After reaching Khaplu, the final leg of his long cycling adventure, Patrick needed a simple thing—a cardboard box for his bike so he could pack it for his flight home. That search brought him to our club’s close friend and cycling shop owner, Hasnain. Without hesitation, Hasnain offered the last available bike box and warmly welcomed Patrick into the local cycling community.
That small moment turned into something far more meaningful.
As Patrick shared stories of his journey, Hasnain introduced him to the mission and spirit of Baltistan Cycling Club—our grassroots work with schoolgirls, supporting a paracyclist with one leg, and promoting cycling across the region with limited resources but limitless passion. Patrick was deeply inspired.
The next day, he joined a group of our club members on a casual ride. Together, we cycled to Khosho Chumik, a peaceful riverside spot known for its natural beauty. There, we shared a delicious homemade lunch, cooked by our friend and club cook, and spent a joyful afternoon in nature, exchanging experiences and laughter.
Patrick’s connection with the club grew stronger. The following day, he joined us again—this time for a ride along the mighty Indus River. There, he met our beloved paracyclist, a young boy with only one leg, who continues to ride with strength and hope thanks to the support of our club and community.
Witnessing this, Patrick made a heartfelt decision. As a gesture of gratitude for the kindness he received in Pakistan, he gifted his own bicycle to the club—leaving behind more than just equipment. He left behind a story of connection, generosity, and shared purpose.
Before departing, Patrick shared a few moving words:
“This club has done so much with so little. I’m very impressed. I want to help from back home, to find good bicycles, maybe even help organize cycling tours for tourists to discover Skardu and Khaplu. Thank you to the whole team—it was really a wonderful experience.”
Thank You, Patrick
Baltistan Cycling Club is honored by your visit, your friendship, and your gift. Your journey reminds us that cycling isn’t just a sport—it’s a way to build bridges across cultures, communities, and continents.
